So finally in week 7 I can be happy with the return from my captain (De Bruyne) and yet as the
game week progressed captains remorse built and built. After twenty odd minutes of the first game
of the week I had a goal for my captain, assisted by another of my players and they were on their
way to a potential clean sheet. With that I could hear the sound of bonus points.
85 minutes later
and Spurs are 4-1 up, no clean sheet, no bonus points.
At this point I can still be happy with my return from my captain. An extra 7 points aren’t to be
sniffed at. But then came the 3 o’clock games and with that 8 points for Wayne Rooney. After all
those weeks at captain he delivers once I abandon him. 1 potential extra point missed. Come
Sunday Yohan Cabaye comes up with 9 points against Watford. 2 potential points missed. Then it
just got silly. On MNF Romelo Lukaku came up with 2 goals, an assist and all the bonus points in
Everton’s 3-2 come back win away to West Brom. A potential 9 extra points missed.
That said this week I was lucky enough to experience a real bench boost. I was tricked into
thinking Kompany was fit and had him starting along with Gonmez at Liverpool who appears to
have fallen out of favour with Brendan Rodgers. This meant that some of my bench players came
in and boy did they contribute. Along with the Cabaye points discussed above I also had West
Brom defender Craig Dawson come in and score. An extra 16 points off my bench was very
I’m well aware that with all this “captains remorse” and my “bench boost” it really is a bit of a
humble brag. From all of this I did still have a very good week with a season high 69 points.
For week nine “Operation Rooney Out” is now complete. I had the transfer from last week saved
up and even a goal in week 8 wasn’t emoji to save Rooney’s bacon. After all, it was only against
Sunderland. So with Rooney gone I have bought in the premier league top goal scorer and all
round bad bloke Jamie Vardy along with the games top point scorer Riyad Mahrez. Yes, that is the
sound of me probably locking the stable door after the horse has bolted but with Leicester’s fixture
list below I think in the medium term they can keep this going a bit longer.
After missing Europe midweek I have two Man City injuries this week in Kompany and Toure. I’ll let
them ride the bench for a week and hope that after the international break they will be fit to play.
As for the rest of my team selection I expect/hope Everton give Liverpool a battering in the derby.
So with that in mind and the fact that Brendan doesn’t seem to like him anymore Joe Gomez won’t
be starting for me this week. As for my captain choice I am currently all lost at sea. Should I back
the form men in Mahrez or Vardy? Or do I follow up on Lukaku’s big game and hope he can
reproduce in the Merseyside derby. At the moment I’m thinking of sticking with De Bruyne at home
to a poor Newcastle side. That said I’m worried that Newcastle might be on the up after a draw
against Chelsea and that after a midweek adventures he might not see the whole 90 minutes. I
think I’ll go with my gut at deadline. Wish me luck.
